VoiceThread

A VoiceThread is tool for having conversations about a picture or image.

Here's an example of one that I made:

Here's a tutorial from the creator of VoiceThread explaining what it is and how to use it:

How to Create a VoiceThread:

  1. Create a free account at http://voicethread.com
  2. Sign in (may require email activation, can't remember).
  3. Click on "Create" at top left of screen.
  4. Upload an image by clicking on "upload/edit".
  5. Click on "Comment".
  6. You can now upload avatars/photos of yourself and your students (it will prompt you). Upload one for you first.
  7. Then, to add "identities" on your account for each of your students, click on the photo/avatar of you and choose "Create another identity".
  8. Add all your students.
  9. Now, when you want them to comment, they simply click on whichever avatar appears at the bottom left of the picture and find theirs.
  10. To record an audio comment, click on "comment", then "record".
  11. Click on "ok, start talking" when you're done and then "save".
  12. Your avatar will then move up to a place beside the image you're commenting on.
  13. The next person can then add a comment in the same way.
  14. If you want to add more pages, click on "upload/edit" again.
  15. Your work is saved as you go, each time you click "save" after recording a comment. Your students' avatars will also be saved, so you can re-use them for other VoiceThread projects (this will make the second and subsequent ones even faster to create).
  16. To look at your VoiceThreads, go to "My Voice". There are also some excellent tutorials there for doing various things.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • Have students give opinions about something - novel/story, art work, a piece of writing, poetry, etc
  • Peer feedback on student work - upload student work and have other students in the class comment on a few pieces
  • Summary of learning - have students describe some of their learning in a unit of work
